Absolutely the World's Worst Wordplay Pun! (Pliny is very proud)

  1. This linguistic puzzle involves one visual and two grammatical layers to get to the pun-chline. The kind of thing I love - a trait shared with, well, nobody is my guess.

  3. My take was nuns/nones, and the fact that the biggest losers in the recent Pew survey are the Catholics, and atheists aren't just men anymore.

  4. You got part of it. the next part has to do with what the relationship between nun and none is grammatically

    1. Now you've pointed it out, I get it! :-) The vow of chastity i.e. another none.

  5. Although I still feel like I might still be missing a bit! I often feel a bit inadequate with your cartoons - which is a good thing :-) I like trying to work it out.

  6. As I've mentioned before some of my panels are such inside jokes that they never get outside of my head. But the real punchline is related to how nun relates to none phonetically. And how that word, used in a sentence, could be misconstrued in a pun. As I said, it's a bit convoluted even for moi.

  7. I did get the phonetics - I didn't mention it specifically because I thought it was obvious, so, no, you're not being too convoluted there! :-)

  8. But I am - None and nun are homophones. If they could get the pope to say that he hates homophones, you could see how that might play out to everyone's advantage...
